The free will debate shows the disagreement in what is the ultimate cause of human actions. There are two theories. The determinists believe that all of our actions are generated by external causes such as the external world or the environment in which one was raised. Libertarians believe that some actions are "spontaneous free will" and some of them are caused by the external cause. I believe that the libertarian argument is more credible and therefore I agree with their beliefs.
(A) Libertarianism explains more types of human behavior. Unlike determinists libertarians believe in spontaneity. Determinists fail to explain those times when you do something just to do it. They say that those don't occur that everything is generated by external causes or by how one was raised.
(B)Libertarianism states more causes of human behavior than determinism. Determinism talks about all the actions being caused by the external world and how a person is brought up. Libertarianism talks about free will and the spontaneity factor in the cause of human actions. Libertarianism also supports more then one reason for why humans behave the way they do. The outside world and their own free will.
(C)Simplicity can be found more in libertarianism than in determinism. Determinism states that human behavior is caused by the external causes such as the external world or the environment in which someone was raised but that in it self is complicated. Everyone has grown up in a different situation and even if you and someone else went through the same situation (such as your parents getting a divorce) no two peoples experiences went down the exact same way. Therefore how can you say that is the cause of human behavior you would never have a set categorization. In that cause every human would be in a different behavior category. Libertarianism on the other hand says that human behavior is caused by "spontaneous free will" and some are caused by the external cause. This is a much simpler explanation.
(D)Both libertarianism and determinism are equally conservative due to the fact that there is no hard proof whether human behavior is cause by free will and external or just external.
Libertarianism and determinism are the most plausible explanations of human behavior. Libertarianism has more explanatory breadth, explanatory depth, and simplicity than determinism. However both are equally conservative.
Therefore libertarianism is the best explanation of the cause of human behavior
Overall your post was very good and agree with your statements. In the sections where you select which theory best describes a certain point of topic you forgot to mention whether you were talking about explanatory breadth/depth. Aside from this your post was very well presented and you did a good job highlighting the several important parts of the arguments.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with much of your blog post, including most of your reasoning for conservatism. I believe that both theories are equally conservative in ways. However, especially in our modern day, I find libertarianism to be much more conservative. Libertarianism focuses on science, and much of our beliefs today are rooted in scientific concepts. Some people who agree with determinism do so out of religious beliefs, stating that God preplanned our lives. However, since science is so much more widely accepted and able to be tested and proved, I do believe that libertarianism holds more conservatism. I do not believe that it is incorrect or absurd to say that they are equally conservative, but I find that libertarianism lines up better with out common sense beliefs.
