Free Will Debate

Free Will Debate
Everyone has their own opinion whether humans have complete free will or lack it.There are two theories about this. Libertarian believe human beings have moral responsibility because they have spontaneous free will. Determinist believe human beings lack free will because of all of our actions are caused by earlier psychological or physical events. Personally, I agree more with libertarians. Though I do kind of agree with soft determinist. I believe that we all make our own choices everyday whether they are hard or small decisions. You can decide what your own actions will be.

Libertarianism has more explanatory breadth than determinism. Determinist are cannot address things that just happen. They believe there is a cause for it, so they might focus more on the cause than the actual action or behavior. Which means they fail to address many behaviors because they think things can be predicted before. Libertarians, however, are open to show more behaviors because they are so spontaneous.

There is more explanatory depth in libertarians. Taking things into our own hand by behaving differently can provide more. They support more than a simple reason as to why we behave the way we do. Which means libertarians can give more detail as to why we do such things. While determinist feel that it has to do with how we are raised and the external world. They would only think about it as to what they are taught in life. When in reality there is a lot more to it. You have to think of it as that and how do we want to control it.

Determinist are has more simplicity. Since they believe that everything will have to something happening in the future they will miss many parts. Determinist will not be able to act to things that have no connection because they assume that everything should have a connection to something. It may throw them off when they cannot find anything. Libertarians may be more complex because they act how they feel. You may never know what to expect from their behavior. It definitely will come with a lot more than determinist.

Both libertarians and determinist are conservative. Each theory has beliefs that many follow. They both have the common sense whether behavior is caused by free will and past event or either separately. One constantly may try to correct our actions but connecting with our current. Both theories want to make sure it is consistent on our individual ideas and ideas that we are taught. It just depends how each theory uses it.

Inference to the Best Argument:
1. Libertarians and determinist are the most plausible explanations of the cause of human actions.
2. Libertarians have much more explanatory breadth and explanatory depth, whereas determinist has a little more simplicity, and both libertarians and determinist are equally conservative.
3. Therefore, libertarians is the best explanation of the cause of human actions.

  1. In your inference to the Best Argument you stated that "libertarians and determinists are the most plausible explanations of the cause of human actions" Just as a simple critique I would say that libertarianism and determinism are the most plausible theoretical explanations of the cause of human actions. Sometimes throughout the post I had trouble understanding what you meant by certain things just because of the phrasing used in certain scenarios. Overall I agree with your argument, and the supporting information behind your statements.

  2. I like how your reference to everyone having their own opinion despite the concept of having free will is represented throughout your debate. I will point out that determinism is not conservative due to the lack of beings understanding of the concept which makes it hard for people to accept determinism as the way we all are. Also, you must provide examples to prove your broad statements such as " Determinist will not be able to act to things that have no connection because they assume that everything should have a connection to something." Giving an example of what you meant by "things" and "connection to something," the reader would have had a better understanding of your perception.
