The Free Will Debate
Determinism
is the belief that human beings have no free will. All of our actions and
decisions are predetermined or decided by physical or physiological forces that
occur very early in life. Due to the fact that we cannot alter the path that
our lives can take, determinists believe that human beings cannot be morally
responsible for their actions, whether good or bad.
On the
other hand, Libertarianism is the belief that human beings do have free
will. They believe that we have the
ability to control and change our actions and we can consciously make choices
that will alter the course of our lives.
Libertarionists believe that human beings have to take moral
responsibility for their actions because they are able to make the decisions
that can change the rest of their lives.
Personally,
I feel that the Libertarionists have a more plausible argument. My reason for this is because there is no way
that every single human beings life course is already determined before they
are even old enough to start making there own decisions. Humans do have free
will; any living person can make spontaneous decisions that will alter their
life no matter what, for negative or positive. Also, the consequences of
peoples spontaneous decisions will lead to new decisions based off of the
situation, proving that humans determine there own life’s courses. Also, the
path that someone is ‘supposed’ to take can sometimes be changed which, again I
think proves that’s we do have free will. For example, I could live my whole
life with a solid plan of becoming a doctor, lets says, and then something
tragic in my life could happen which would throw my life’s plan off.
I think
that Libertarionists have more explanatory breadth because a lot of human
beings different behaviors come from spontaneous actions. Libertarianism
explains more types of human behaviors than determinism does, and determinism
would only explain predetermined factors, which I believe narrows the options
down.
I also
think that Libertarionists have more explanatory depth because human behavior
is so random and strange, I think that it can only be explained by spontaneous
factors. Human behavior is not a science and is always changing, I think
proving that libertarianism explains the causes of human behavior much better
than determinism.
However, I
do think that determinists have more simplicity. This is because if all human
beings actions are predetermined and they are not capable of making spontaneous
decisions the fewer parts associated with them make it less likely there are
concealed hidden errors.
Libertarianism
has more conservatism because the idea of spontaneous thinking and actions and
that human beings have free will are more consistent with our current, common
sense beliefs.
1.
Libertarianism and determinism are the most
plausible explanations of how human choices are made.
2.
Libertarianism has more explanatory breadth,
depth, and conservatism while determinism has more simplicity.
3.
Therefore, libertarianism is the best
explanation of how humans make there choices and shows that human beings have
free will.
I disagree with what you said about how people aren't born with there life course because they are no ones why though but if people weren't then how you explain all the major events that happened there was a purpose for everything nobody just thought of doing something because of free will it was already determined I believe which makes more sense
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your point of view however I have to disagree with one of your points. You said that there is no way that all of life choice are predetermined, but in some cases yes, some people go through there entire life living there life based off external or psychological forces. For example a child in an extremely religious household may live his entire life based on his parents teaching(external/psychological force). So it is possible to live a predetermined life. This is really the basis of the libertarianism argument they beileve some of our actions are caused by external forces and some are by free will.
